Why do we read a book?

 

• Some books we read because of its author being a celebrity.
• Some books we read because of its presentation style.
• Some books we read because they delve on issues that are so relevant and in dire need of social discussion.
• And some books we read because of its title and some because of its good cover.

And it is very rare when a book comes along that scores very highly on all five counts and that book is bound to be a chart topper.

 

That outstanding book is “Harassed Husbands” and is written by Dr. Kusum who has worked in Indian Law Institute for three decades at least. In 1977 she was awarded the UNDP Human Rights fellowship for her outstanding work in Australia and New Zealand.

 

In India she discovered a saga of Human Rights abuses in the name of Matrimonial Law and wrote a book Harassed Husbands to highlight the same high handedness.

 

She clearly hints that that women who put 498 A and other laws against the husbands eventually suffer coz  “ Many a marriages, which could have been saved..have been ruined because of misuse of certain penal provisions.”

 

Because of writing these statistics in bold words, she got lot of praise from men and women of honor and dignity.

 

Usual shouting suspects, vested interests organization made her eat lot of flak even before the book was published. But she continued with her book writing and says this on cover “ This small book is aimed at setting the ball rolling…all in the interest of family and society."

 

PP Rao, Senior Advocate of Supreme Court of India says “ This book will give solace and strength to harassed husbands all over the country.”

 

Harassed Husband Book gives innumerable judgments and though book was published in 1993 with second edition in 2004, it is still relevant.

It is time that authors like Dr. Kusum are encouraged to write more books and Regency Publication should be praised for supporting Dr Kusum.
